WannaCry Ransomware Scam hits NHS

It was just over a year ago when I posted the .locky article on my website describing the ransomware scam I was beginning to see a lot of and I said at the time , we’d be seeing more of this kind of thing. Well on Friday, a much more virulent variant was back and this time it had hooked up with a very effective new method of propagating itself from one computer to another within a network without the computer user having to do anything to let it in. The ‘WannaCry’ ransomware scam hit tens of thousands , maybe hundreds of thousands of... Read more...

You should be so .LOCKY !

I have seen this twice now in the past few weeks and – I’ll put money on it – no doubt I’ll be seeing it again soon. The scam I’m about to describe is called .LOCKY and it has already caused the permanent destruction of many millions of personal computer files around the world. Let me tell you why this is such a concern to me and why you need to know about this. Here’s how it works. Firstly, it has to find its way on to your computer. That is incredibly easy today. Despite all the warnings to the contrary, people still open email... Read more...

Edge is Still a Work in Progress

Setting Your Default Browser Back to Internet Explorer.   Possibly the most noticeable change which Windows 10 has brought to users upgrading from 7 or 8.1 is the introduction of the new default Internet Web browser, Microsoft Edge. This is a replacement browser for the well known, though not universally loved, Internet Explorer. Edge has a very modern, minimalist look and feel which we like. Windows 10 – but maybe not so fast

As I write this in the second week of September and only 6 weeks after Microsoft released Windows 10 to the world, it is being estimated that there must be approaching 100 million users already. That’s a fairly staggering number. It has been stated by Microsoft that their goal is to get Windows 10 running on over a billion devices within 2 or 3 years. So, if they are nearly 10% of the way there in only 6 weeks, I think they’ll be pretty happy – euphoric even! However, in the same 6 weeks, I’ve had 4 clients call me to report problems after –... Is Your PC Fully Recoverable?

It is a sad fact that the only people who prick up their ears and actually listen when I start talking about data loss and its prevention are those who have previously experienced the loss of a hard drive.  They KNOW the hassle involved and they really never want to go through it all again.  Everyone else just thinks I must be exaggerating – “ it can’t be that bad”. Well, believe me, it can! The first reaction I get when I mention backups is either a blank stare because my listener  doesn’t know what I’m even talking about, or, the more... Read more...
